Larry Coryell Whether his playing tenure with Gary Burton in the 60s, his time as a member of the eclectic electric Foreplay, its mainly acoustic teaming with Joe Beck and John McLaughlin, or its rich catalog of albums solo, Larry Coryell was one of the first true geniuses of jazz guitar-rock. He has almost invented the brand. Coryell threw the kitchen sink in his eternal emotional phrasing and tone. It was as hard and bluesy as he was gentle and bop-oriented. It was unclear as furiously as he was quietly Clarion. Energy and invention are its keys. Plus, Coryell was racing ahead of thick, long hair.
